New Year…New Hobby

The start of a New Year is a wonderful opportunity to take up a new hobby, both for you and your loved one. It is a chance to be creative, learn something new and give those brain cells an opportunity to stretch and multiply.

To celebrate the start of the New Year, we’ve come up with some ideas for hobbies you and your loved one can undertake together, bringing a new sense of purpose and anticipation for visiting times and a great sense of accomplishment to you both.

  1. Family Album

Why not bring in some old photographs, an empty photo album, and share memories, stories and reminisce as you create a family album together. This is an amazing activity for any of our residents living with dementia, as it will trigger, fond, long-term memories. It is also an excellent activity for our residents who have mobility issues, allowing them to get involved in something fun and different from the comfort of an armchair.

  1. Book Club

Here’s a list of the BBC’s Top 100 books…if there are a few on there you haven’t read, why not embark on a journey to complete the list with your loved one? You could pick a book together and read a chapter at every visit. You never know, you may attract the interest of some of our other residents and it could be the start of a brand-new book club.

  1. Cake Decorating

From creating yummy fondant flowers to piping to moulding, there are endless ways to decorate a cake. If you’d like to bring some equipment in, just have a chat with one of our friendly team and we will provide some space for you and your loved one to complete this task together…especially if you’re offering a slice of your beautiful creation at the end of it.

  1. Step It Up

Invest in a matching set of Fit Bits in the January sales and make increasing your steps your new hobby. This could mean getting some fresh air in one of the wonderful parks on our doorstep in Stockport, taking a turn around our beautiful landscaped gardens, or even having a wander round the nooks and crannies of our homes. And if this gives you a taste for getting fitter in 2020, then don’t forget about our regular SMILE exercise sessions, designed specifically for older people alongside our partners Life Leisure, friends and family are more than welcome to join in.

  1. Bird Watching

The UK is home to some beautiful birds, and at each of our Borough Care homes, we are lucky to have large, landscaped gardens that are home to some of these beautiful creatures. 2020 is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about these birds, either from the comfort of one of our warm and toasty conservatories or by heading into the gardens to see the birds up close. And, as the weather improves, and spring brings the first new buds of the season, you’d be very welcome to indulge your green fingers in our gardens too.

We hope these ideas have inspired you and your loved one to try something new in 2020. And if we can help facilitate any hobbies and projects you are about to embark on, please let us know, we’d be happy to help!
