National Gardening Week

Borough Care residents will be participating in a number of different gardening activities during National Gardening Week (Saturday 27 April – Sunday 5 May).

Geraldine Blow, Area Manager at Borough Care, says: “Gardening is a very popular activity among our residents, as many used to enjoy tending their own gardens.  Regular gardening activities take place at each of our homes and we put on additional gardening themed events during National Gardening Week, for residents and their families and friends to enjoy.  Gardening is a great way to encourage people to go outside and get some fresh air, which has proven wellbeing benefits.  Our less active residents can also participate, as we grow small plants and flowers indoors, which they can help water.”

Lots of different gardening activities are planned at Borough Care’s Shepley House in Hazel Grove, to coincide with National Gardening Week.  Residents, helped by family members and staff, will be growing their own fruit and herbs.  Small plants, flowers and shrubs will be planted in window boxes and other small containers so residents who can’t get outdoors can still enjoy gardening.  When all the hard work is done, there will be a chance for residents to relax and enjoy playing some garden games.

During National Gardening Week, residents at Silverdale in Bredbury will be planting seeds and looking forward to seeing the flowers come up.  Residents at Bamford Close in Cale Green regularly join forces with Year 5 pupils at Cale Green Primary School for their gardening activities.

Residents at Meadway Court in Bramhall take part in a regular gardening club and will soon be planting sunflower seeds, one of the highlights of their gardening year.  Residents here recently made some bird feeders, which they’ve hung up in the garden to attract the birds.  Residents at Lisburne Court in Offerton also participate in a gardening club and staff are looking to involve pupils from a local primary school in the club.

Marbury House residents have started to tidy up the garden after the winter and will be planting new seeds now the weather’s milder and they can spend time outdoors.  During National Gardening Week, residents will each plant a sunflower in a pot, which they will be responsible for tending.  Each person can then take their sunflower home when they leave Marbury House.
