Life in Colour: 10 things that make Hen Cloud House special

By 22 February 2022Borough Care News

Opened in September 2021, Hen Cloud House is our 66-bed care home based in Leek, Staffordshire. At Borough Care, we are thrilled that Hen Cloud House has received a score of 10 out of 10 on carehome.co.uk. Home Manager, Paul Bradford said the news is ‘fabulous’, adding ‘this is an amazing achievement for all of the staff team at Hen Cloud House and our wonderful residents and their relatives.’ To celebrate, we’ve listed 10 things that make Hen Cloud House a special place to live life in colour!

Our residents

At Hen Cloud House, and all of our homes, the fascinating characters of our residents are respected, admired and celebrated with activities, friendship and the freedom to lead fulfilled and valuable lives. Our residents’ happiness and comfort is always a top priority. We believe everyone should be encouraged and supported to live their best possible life, whatever their age, health or capabilities. Instead of settling into a grey existence, we choose to live life in colour!

The home

The home is made up of small households, each with communal areas, sitting and dining rooms. The familiarity of these households supports those living with dementia, whilst enabling them to enjoy the facilities in the home. Each of Hen Cloud House’s beautifully furnished bedrooms comes with a TV point, kitchenette and en-suite wet room. Paul remarked: “It is a brand new, purpose-built luxury building. We are constantly told that Hen Cloud House is like a 5-star hotel!”

Our staff

Our staff are at the heart of what we do at Hen Cloud House. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to provide the necessary care to our residents and help them to live their lives in colour. Delivering great care is so important to us, but it’s also important that we take the time to check in with our team and ensure that they feel supported by us. When asked if there was anyone on his team that he’d like to give a special thanks to on the brilliant achievement, Paul said: “Everyone, as they have all played a part in the success of Hen Cloud House.”

The visitors

Our visitors are welcomed with open arms at Hen Cloud House. One visitor remarked: “Staff rolled out the red carpet and provided a welcome pack on arrival. The whole unit looks like a 5-star hotel. All staff are exceptionally friendly and invested in helping my dad. We can visit at any time and are always made welcome. The staff are very knowledgeable regarding his medications and needs. Nothing is too much trouble for them – I wish I could move in!”

Our ALF

We wanted to take the time to say a thank you to our brilliant ALF (Activity and Lifestyle Facilitator) Kirt. As a result of his hard work, Hen Cloud House residents have had the most wonderful time enjoying plenty of exciting activities across our homes. From wedding anniversaries and 100th birthday celebrations to relaxing spa days, our residents truly have been enjoying life in colour.

The facilities

There are lots of things to keep residents active and entertained around Hen Cloud House. We have a hairdressers and beauty salon, as well as live entertainment, games and activities. There is even a cinema where you can book a family movie night!

Our care

Our whole approach, embraced by our fully-trained staff, is to encourage every resident to live the most fulfilled and valuable lives, focused on quality relationships for the well-being and happiness of all those who choose to live with us, and their loved ones. According to Paul: “It’s the people – all the residents, the staff, relatives and visitors – that make Hen Cloud House such a special place.”

Our supporters

Hen Cloud House’s grand opening event in September wasn’t short of local celebrities and supporters! Leek Town Mayor, Lyn Swindlehurst, joined us in doing the honours of cutting the ribbon, before leading a wonderful speech about the opening of the home. Much-loved Town Crier, Bill Lomas came along to check out the venue alongside local Councillors Charlotte Atkins and Ben Emery as well. It was a truly spectacular celebration that brought together the local community of Leek!

Our location

Leek was recently voted the best place to live in Staffordshire and we are proud to be part of the community there. Leek is known as the “Queen of The Moorlands” and has got itself a reputation as an antiques centre. Each area was ranked based on factors including their natural beauty, quality of life and architectural beauty, with Leek coming out on top in the region.

Our expertise

Achieving a mark of 10 is no mean feat. When asked what advice he would give others to achieve the same in their homes, Paul said: “It’s all about customer service and staff approach to potential residents and their relatives, asking people to complete the review cards when they are being complimentary about Hen Cloud House and capturing their views in writing at the moment in time.”
