When a loved one moves into residential care their lifestyle changes and previous gift ideas may no longer be appropriate. With Christmas fast approaching we have put our heads together to come up with some thoughtful gift ideas your loved one will appreciate and enjoy.
Essential Oil Diffuser / Air Freshener
Give them something to make their home smell like home. Getting an essential oil diffuser will make their room a bit more their own. Many oil diffusers come with calming essential oils such as lavender, which can aid sleep and alleviate stress.
A Digital Photo Frame
This could be a lovely memory for your loved one as well as a brilliant conversation starter and reminiscence prompt for those living with dementia. There can be some downsizing when moving into long-term care, but a digital photo frame can hold as many photographs as an album. To make the gift even more thoughtful you could upload the images yourself.
Slip Resistant Slippers
We recommend that slip resistant footwear is worn at all times by our residents to protect against falls. Gifting your loved one a new pair of slip resistant slippers will be a nice gift but also something useful and practical that they will need.
Puzzles and Games
This gift is a great way for our residents to connect with others and give their brain a workout. It is also a wonderful activity you can do together when visiting, and a fun way to involve grandchildren and get them to look forward to visits. Just ensure the game is simple enough for everyone to enjoy!
Hampers
Go the extra mile by creating a hamper of their favourite food and drink. Their favourite bottle of wine; some extra special biscuits they can enjoy and also offer to visitors; calming herbal tea infusions; and perhaps some chocolate, that can be enjoyed in the peace and quiet of their own room (and the grandchildren can nibble on). Just ensure you choose non-perishable goods that can be stored in their rooms.
Gift Certificate for our Onsite Hairdresser
Treat them to a new ‘do’ for Christmas by speaking to our staff about a gift voucher for our onsite hairdresser. Useful and practical, this gift also gives them the chance to be pampered and relax.
A Trip Out
One of the most thoughtful gifts you can give is the gift of time. Taking the time to visit our homes and treat your loved one to a day out is a memorable and enjoyable experience.
